‘Message to Aztlán’
(Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales)
8/10 (B+)
‘Message to Aztlán' is a collection of poetry, plays, major speeches, and political essays by renowned Chicano civil rights leader Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales. Widely known and respected for his deeply-moving poem ‘I Am Joaquín' (a major piece of literature studied in college Chicano Studies courses throughout the United States), Corky’s writings and lectures helped lay the base for much of the thinking and ideas of the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and '70s.
As a student of Chicano history, I highly enjoyed reading this thought-provoking compilation of a brilliant and passionate activist who was the central core and definitive voice of the Chicano Movement.
*The thirty-six pieces in this volume were written between 1966 and 1980, during the height of the Chicano Movement.
